Paul Hobbs op bezoek bij Henri Bloem

 Vrijdagavond 14 mei 2010 was Paul Hobbs in Nederland.Deze ex-wijnmaker van Opus One (Mondavi): is o.a. bekend van Cobos Wines en Pascual Toso (beide Argentinië). We kunnen rustig stellen dat Mr. Hobbs aan de wieg heeft gestaan van het grote succes van de Argentijnse Malbecs.  We hebben voortreffelijk gedineerd bij Ron Blauw in Ouderkerk a/d Amstel. Ronald de Groot van Nederlands bekendste wijntijdschrift Perswijn was ook aanwezig en al even enthousiast.

De Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs en Cabernet Sauvigons van Paul Hobbs maakten grote indruk op ons. Topper van de avond was natuurlijk de ‘To Kalon Vineyard’ (Oakville), één van de grootste Cabernets van California. Er zijn 1er Cru’s uit de Bordeaux die dit niveau niet halen.

Er wordt op dit moment hard aan gewerkt om deze wijnen bij ons in de winkels te krijgen. Weer een zeer prestigieuze aanvulling van ons assortiment.

Robert Parker beoordeelde de 2007 als volgt:

“From the amazing Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard, Hobbs’ 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a slightly more opulent, broader, savory effort that comes close to the perfect 2002. The 2007 has more noticeable tannin than the 2002 did at the same stage as well as more obvious minerality, but notes of graphite, black currant liqueur, licorice, cedar, and spice box are found in this full-bodied, multidimensional, fabulously concentrated wine. It was aged in 100% new Taransaud French oak barrels. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following three decades.
This is a brilliant portfolio of Cabernet Sauvignons from Paul Hobbs, one of the wine world’s top consultants whose own California projects are augmented by his superb work in Argentina. Paul Hobbs’ Syrahs, Chardonnays, and Pinot Noirs from outside of Napa will be reviewed in the next issue.”

Het Parker-effect…?

Om in deze crisistijden - voor één keertje - een beetje zuinig te doen, heeft onze proefgroep besloten de hand op de knip te houden. Op de proeftafel van onze Haagse WijnSociëteit stonden dit keer 15 door ons ingebrachte wijnen rond het thema “Het beste rood onder de 10 euro”. Het werd uiteindelijk een wedstrijdje: wie had de beste wijn ingebracht…? Maar wat wint er dan? Frans? Nieuwe wereld? Klassiek elegant of bombastisch hout?

Robinson of Parker?
Ik wilde zelf een malbec uit de Nieuwe Wereld inbrengen: 2008 Mendoza, malbec reserve, Pascual Toso. Stevige wijn met 12 maanden houtrijping. Kruidig, vanille en mocca. Ik had ook nog een tweede malbec gekocht (2008 Mendoza, malbec, Viña Cobos, Felino), voor ’s avonds bij de lamsrack. Een lekkere wijn met een elegantere stijl, 9 maanden houtrijping, mooie fraicheur en fijn puur fruit. Die ging grif op bij het botermalse lammetje. Nou vooruit, nog één glaasje na van de stevige Pascual Toso die voor de proeverij was. Viel me na de elegantere Felino wat tegen. Toch iets teveel hout. Toch teveel ‘Parker’. Daar waar Felino ergens werd omschreven als “less plush, more Robinson”. Ah, daarom hield ik er meer van…!

Beverwijn
Mijn inzending was in elk geval al voor de proeverij op. Ik moest de wijn dus opnieuw kopen. Ik legde mijn nieuwe dilemma voor aan de wijnhandelaar: moest ik mijn oorspronkelijke inzending (Pascual Toso) handhaven of gaan voor de Felino die ik zelf lekkerder en eleganter vond? Het advies luidde: “Doe de Toso maar. Die is steviger en valt in zo’n competitie meer op.” Het ‘Parker-effect’ dus, stel ik even zwart-wit vast. Omdat ik niet zo van die beverwijnen met geprononceerd hout ben, wilde ik eigenlijk voor de elegantie gaan. Ik besloot beide wijnen mee te nemen en te kijken welke zou winnen.

Douze points voor …
Van de 15 ingezonden wijnen kwamen er zes uit Frankrijk, 4 uit Italië, twee uit Spanje en drie van buiten Europa. Wat zou er winnen? We gingen individueel alle wijnen proeven en rangschikken. Het was net het ouderwetse Eurovisie Songfestival: douze points voor de winnaar. Trotse winnaar werd de enige Zuidafrikaan in het gezelschap: 2006 Doolhof, Cape Boar. Een mooie blend van merlot, malbec en shyraz. Niet zonder discussie overigens, want terwijl een aantal van ons de wijn op nummer 1 zetten, hadden sommigen hem niet eens bij de beste 12!? Verrassend. Love or hate dus. De tweede positie was voor een Valpolicella Ripasso (2007, Capitel della Crosara). ‘Mijn’ elegante Felino-malbec werd… derde! En Pascual Toso eindigde op de zevende plek. Ha! Had ik toch goed gegokt. Elegantie wint van beverwijn. Het Parker-effect had dus niet helemaal toegeslagen in het Haegsche. Pascual Toso werd verslagen door Felino. Een mooie uitslag. En een interessante proeverij.

PASCUAL TOSO Mendoza History and Philosophy:

Established in 1890 by Pascual Toso from Piemonte in Italy, this is one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Argentina, and since its foundation has been characterised by their ongoing innovation. In 2001, internationally renowned Californian oenologist Paul Hobbs was appointed to began work on the development of premium and super-premium wines for Toso. Paul and his talented winemaking team continue to reap success, and have in a short period already produced some highly acclaimed wines.

Vineyards and Climate:

Toso own more than 400 hectares at 715 metres above sea level at Las Barrancas, in Maipú within the Mendoza River highland. The region is dry with warm summers, cold winters, and excellent sunlight levels, which are perfect for the development of flavour, colour and tannins. The water for irrigation comes from the snow of the Andes Mountains via the “Mendoza River”. All fruit is handpicked at optimum ripeness, with the grapes for the Reserve wines coming from 40-year-old vines, with only natural yeasts used.

Pascual Toso Malbec 2008 Winemaker’s comments:

– Clean and fruitful nose of plums and quince with blackberry and liquorice flavours. Rich and long, with smoky accents of vanilla and lingering oak.
